Should i take up rowing to get fit?

Im 17 and really want to take up a sport to get fit, My uni sports union offers rowing but im not sure how suitable i would be for it, my dad thinks i could be too heavy for it. im 5ft11 and have a bmi of 26. i have always been interested in rowing and have been thinking about getting a rowing machine to improve my cardio fitness. if you dont think im suitable for swimming, if you could recommend another sport, cheers
Answer:
I think rowing will be an excellent way to get fit. It's a great cross-training form of exercise. It will build all over body strength and muscle, it will improve your cardio vascular fitness and endurance and it's a great team sport (well, real rowing in a real boat with real other people in real water is anyway). If you already carry a significant amount of muscle naturally, your BMI may be a deceptive figure as muscle weighs more than fat and BMI takes no acount of your body composition (that is fat to lean tissue ratio). If you do take up "real" rowing, try to join with other beginners. Trying to keep up with crowd of experienced rowers could be overdoing it at first.
go for it. i did it for a year at uni. i got a lot fitter and the social side to it was great. you wont be too big for rowing.if you are going to get a rowing machine i wouldnt recomend anything other than a concept 2 rower. they arent cheap though but all gyms have them.
Yeah! rowing is a great way to stay in shape and even to lose wait if you want. It really worked for my friend. He lost 27 pounds and is maintaining his wait.
excellent aerobic exercise
if u really want ot take up rowing i say go for it nothing shuld ever hold u back from doing wat u alwazs want to do
i have heard that rowing is an excellent way to get fit. it is great cardio and helps with the upper and middle of the body and really it is great to get your heart rate up to burn cals.
Definately take up rowing it will help your health while you are doing something you enjoy! : )
do it!! also try 2 minutes of sit-ups 3 times a day. great for when ur watching tv. have someone put a lot of weight on ur feet it will be easier for you and don't use stomache muscles when going back down. just let yourself fall. start off fast and keep the momentum as long as possible. Do 2 minutes of push-ups 2-3 times a day. Don't look at the floor look straight ahead. Also run. But yes do rowing. Eat wheaties or frosted flakes for breakfast. no sugary cereal.
Do the exercise that interests you
If you enjoy the exercises you are more likely to keep at it and improve your fitness than you are doing something that you cant really put your heart into
